Italy’s technological evolution has reached a pivotal turning point, moving from a phase of fragmented growth to one of “Solidified Transformation”. This transition is the central theme of the Italian Tech Landscape 2026, the 3rd edition of the landmark report by La Tech Made in Italy and Altermind, which offers an extensive mapping of this progress.
The scale of growth since the report’s inception has been remarkable. While the inaugural 2024 edition mapped 245 solutions, the 2026 landscape reveals a robust and maturing network:
- 1,652 tech solutions mapped across 669 companies;
- €15.2 billion in total aggregate revenue;
- 70,535 professionals employed within the sector;
- 32 distinct categories, showcasing the breadth of the Italian software and hardware ecosystem.
Artificial Intelligence from pilot to production
According to the report, Artificial Intelligence is the undisputed star of the current landscape. Al has transitioned from experimental pilot projects to a production powerhouse, with 63% of large Italian companies having already adopted or planned its implementation.
The economic impact is concentrated in three primary functional areas: Marketing & Sales (35.7%), Administration (28.2%), and Research & Development (24.6%). Collectively, the AI sector generates €4.1 billion in revenue and supports over 22,700 jobs, acting as the principal driver for a projected €115 billion boost to national productivity.
The startup ecosystem and the “Alumni Effect”
The 2026 data highlights a resilient startup environment. Venture capital remains stable, with €1.735 billion invested across 436 rounds in 2025, the second-best year on record for the Italian market. Software continues to attract the highest volume of capital at €494 million.
A vital qualitative trend identified is the “Alumni Effect”. A new generation of founders is emerging from established Italian unicorns and scale-ups, bringing high-level execution experience to complex sectors such as Deep Tech, Climate Tech, and Biotech.
Regional performance
While Lombardy remains the primary hub with 601 mapped solutions, the report identifies a healthy geographic expansion. Beyond the regions of Piemonte, Veneto, and Emilia-Romagna, the South is showing significant momentum, led by Campania (74 solutions) and Puglia (48 solutions).
Strategic challenges
Despite the presence of 9 active Italian unicorns, with a combined valuation exceeding $15.5 billion, the report identifies a persistent structural challenge. Italy continues to face a “scaling gap” due to a lack of late-stage mega-rounds (over €100 million) compared to other major European hubs. Bridging this gap will be essential for “Tech Made in Italy” to unlock its full global potential.
