Incubators and accelerators in Italy: the updated statistics

According to the 2019 report of Social Innovation Monitor (SIM), there are 197 incubators and accelerators in Italy, 26 more than last year.

Over 60% of these companies are located in the north of Italy, mainly in Lombardy (26.4%), and Emilia Romagna (12.7%). 8,3% of them are located in Lazio.

Private sponsors own more than 60% of the Italian incubators and accelerators; 22% of them are public-private partnerships, whilst the remaining 15% of them are fully owned and managed by public bodies.

In 2018, the overall turnover of Italian incubators and accelerators was € 391 million (+76% compared to 2017). Few of them had revenues well above € 2 million, as the median turnover is € 350 thousand (it was € 250 thousand in 2017).

The main services provided by the Italian incubators and accelerators are: managerial support and training, office rent, support in the search of funding program, and networking.

The top four start-up accelerators according to the Startup Accelerator Ranking 2019, provided by Startup Blink, are: Digital Magics, Intesa Sanpaolo Startup Initiative, NAStartUp, Nuvolab.

If we look at the incubated start-ups, the total number of incubated and accelerated companies reached 2.816 in 2018 (+15.6% compared to 2017), representing an overall turnover of € 500 million. Also, the average funding granted to the incubated start-ups noticeably increased, from € 1.18 million € in 2017 to € 3.30 million in 2018 (+ 179%).
