According to the 2020 report of Social Innovation Monitor (SIM), there are 212 incubators and accelerators in Italy, 15 more than last year.
Approx. 60% of these companies are located in the north of Italy, mainly in Lombardy (26%), and Emilia Romagna (13%). 9% of them are located in Lazio.
Private sponsors own more than 60% of the Italian incubators and accelerators; 21% of them are public-private partnerships, whilst the remaining 16% of them are fully owned and managed by public bodies.
In 2019, the overall turnover of Italian incubators and accelerators was € 373 million (-4,6% compared to 2018). The average turnover is € 1,76 million, the median is much lower but in line with previous year (€ 360 thousand).
On average, the analysed incubators and accelerators have 5,66 years, and employ 5,75 people.
The main services provided by the Italian incubators and accelerators are: managerial support and training, office rent, support in the search of funding program, and networking.
If we look at the incubated/accelerated start-ups, the total number of incubated/accelerated companies were 2.162, selected out of 11.050 applications. These numbers are related to 85 incubators and accelerators that participated to the SIM survey (out of 212). Therefore, the average numbers of applications and incubated/accelerated companies are respectively 130 applications and 25,44 companies, whilst the median numbers are 30 applications and 12 companies.
Finally, SIM estimated that the total turnover of all Italian incubated and accelerated start-ups was € 499 million in 2019. These companies employed in total 6.128 people.
