According to the report “The employment impact of Italian innovative startups between 2012 and 2023”, produced by Assolombarda, Unione Industriali di Torino, and Confindustria Genova, Italian innovative startups have created 63,519 jobs between 2012 and 2023.
The report analysed over 30,000 innovative startups registered in the special Innovative Startups section of the Italian Business Register, of which 23,537 are still active. Since 2017, employment has grown between +20% and +30% every year.
The fastest-growing companies are called “gazelles”, companies with a turnover of at least € 1 million, at least 10 employees, and a turnover or employee growth rate of more than 20% for three consecutive years in the first five years of their existence.
In Italy, 79 gazelles have been identified, 64 of which are still active. In 2022 alone, they created 4,609 jobs (7.9% of all innovative companies This corresponds to an average size of more than 70 employees per company, a significant figure in the Italian context, which is made up of small and medium-sized enterprises. In 2022, these enterprises registered a total turnover of € 505 million (4.3% of the total) and generated € 135 million of added value (5.7%).
On the other hand, the total turnover of all innovative startups is € 11.7 billion in 2022 and reaches € 12.8 billion in 2023. The value added, on the other hand, was € 2.4 billion in 2022, rising to € 3 billion in 2023.
Finally, the report analyses the shareholder structure of Italian startups. The total number of shareholders of Italian startups is around 102,000, of which 85% (87.1 thousand) are families and 15% (13.7 thousand) are other companies, of which only 1,200 represent medium-sized companies with more than 50 employees.
